Cactui and Succulents in Hanging Baskets and Garden Planters of almost any type look great and work well in the garden, in patios, on balconies anywhere where they can get lots of sun and are sheltered from conditons that are too cold or too wet from them

They even work well in wall baskets and window boxes - see below.

The Best Cactui - Succulents for Hanging Baskets and Planters?

When we were asked to recommend some of the best cactui or succulent for hanging baskets we were all left a little dumb founded - with so many to choose from - its is really hard to decide on which ones are "best".

Some considerations are the type of planter you plan to grow them in and the "look" you are trying to achive.  For example above succulents "hen and chicks" create a ball effect in this hanging basket while below the "string of beds" creates a nice trailing effect in this hanging basket as seen below.

For Garden Planters you can opt for cactui or succulents with more upright growth habits or you can look for those with trailing habits or even mix the two together for a really nice effect.

This upright succulent works well and allows the planter to be shown off to full effect - it also gives a nice sense of height and proportion balancing this planter beautifully - a trailing succulent or cactui could have made the whole thing to compant.

In this photo a trailing planter normally reserved for hanging baskets and hanging planters has been used to good effect in this pot placed on a post so that the succulent can trial to its hearts content.

Tips of Growing Succulents in a Nut Shell.....

* Most need hot and dry conditions to thrive
* Will not tolerate cold and wet conditions and may begin to rot
* Can be grown indoors and outdoors
* Easy Care - While dought tolerant, watering every few days is recommended

Alternatives to Hanging Baskets & Planters - Living Wreaths

A great and fun way to use succulents is in living wreaths.  iving wreaths are wire frames lined with moss and potting soil - Angel Moss Living Wreaths are  great and come allready preformed so you just add potting soil.

Then once planted you let the succulents and cactui settle and get their roots established and then you can hang them or use them as a table centre piece as seen below - they look great and are a great alternative or compliement to hanging baskets and garden planters.
