Hanging Basket, Mothers Day Gift Idea

A hanging strawberry basket makes a wonderful Mother's Day gift for Mom to hang on her sunny Denver porch. Kids of all ages enjoy planting a hanging strawberry basket Mother's Day gift. These instructions for planting a hanging strawberry basket are simple and foolproof.

Choosing the Hanging Basket for Your Strawberries

Start by purchasing a hanging wire basket with dried Angel Moss insert. These can be found at any Denver garden center. Be sure the strawberry basket is large enough to accommodate several strawberry plants. Make this Mother's Day gift special by making a pair or several hanging strawberry baskets.

A six pack of strawberry plants will be need for each hanging basket. Choose only the perkiest strawberry plants for your mom. Avoid purchasing plants that appear to be wilting or have discoloration. A Mother's Day gift should be perfect, just like Mom.

Hanging Basket of Strawberries, How-ToThe hanging strawberry basket will also require a small bag of potting soil with timed release fertilizer. Compost makes a good substitute. Some like to mix the soil and compost together. The soil will fill in the gaps in between the strawberry plants in the Mother's Day planter for Mom's Denver porch.

Gently remove each strawberry plant from the six pack. It will be easier if the plants are damp. Inverting the container also helps. The strawberry plants for the Denver Mother's Day gift should not be handled roughly. Remove a small portion of the bottom roots for breathe ability.

Place a toothpick gently into the bottom of each strawberry plant, so that about half of it juts out. Spread the plants evenly about the hanging basket, using the toothpicks to secure them to the moss.
The strawberry plants do not need to be perfectly arranged. They will fill in with growth.

Now it's time to add the soil mix to the Mother's Day hanging basket. Fill in the gaps between each strawberry plant with soil. Now cover the strawberry plants with about an inch of soil and pat down gently. Add an inch of mulch material to discourage soil spillage.

Water the Mother's Day hanging strawberry basket gently the first few times and keep damp. It should be hung in a location that receives at least 6 hours of sun per day. Fortunately, this is not a problem in sun soaked Denver. After two weeks the hanging strawberry basket should be well established and able to dry slightly between watering.
